    Family Counseling

Emotional and behavioral health treatment is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on many factors. There are several different approaches that can be used. Psychotherapy requires an active effort on the part of all parties involved as well as a good working relationship among participants. The first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your families’ needs.

By the end of the evaluation period, Dr. Gesek will be able to offer you some first impressions, a diagnosis (if applicable) and treatment goals if it is agreed that treatment will continue.

Parenting approaches are a specialty. Dr. Gesek has extensive experience working with families that are going through separation and divorce. She is also prepared to discuss and consult on a variety of positive parenting topics helpful for any child.

Through a strength-based approach, Dr. Gesek stays away from the use of labels. Although she realizes that a specific diagnosis is helpful to open the door to some school and community-based services, Dr. Gesek feels it is most important to build strengths (resilience) and help kids with lagging skills that may be interfering in their daily lives. It is crucial to use individualized, yet research-supported approaches to family challenges. Whereas there is no one approach that fits all, evidence-based treatments are a priority for Dr. Gesek.
